From “Retracings and Renewings” by Dr. D. A. Doudney

I stand in and by Jesus, and plead before Him that precious promise respecting my poor fallen nature, “Sin shall not have dominion over you, for ye are not under the law, but under grace.” Well am I aware that, if the Lord withdraw His hand, or remove His restraining power, there is not a sin of which I am not capable, nor a temptation to which I should not yield; but then (thanks to His name!) I feel a greater clinging to the promise, and a stronger hold upon the great Promiser, who says, “I will put my fear into their hearts, that they shall not depart from Me.”

Now here, in Him and His gracious promises, rests my hope. You know my favourite signature is a FREE-GRACE PENSIONER; upon His kindly keeping, His gracious bounty, His unalterable faithfulness, I, one of the vilest of sinners and the weakest of saints, rest from day to day; with not a rag to cover me but His righteousness; nothing to wash in but His precious blood; naught else to feed upon but Himself, the bread of eternal life. Nor have I one thought of deliverance in life – the slightest prospect of support in death – nor a single ray of hope in the contemplation of eternity, but in a precious, precious, precious Christ. Take me from Him and Him from me; divest me of my hope in Him and His interest in me, and down I sink into the vortex of despair.
